These sellers used unconventional means to reel in would-be buyers.

Strategy: Put it on eBay

When Jim and Jennifer Yeckering of Owensboro, Kentucky listed their stately 1850s home last summer, they also posted it on eBay.com. They figured: Why not? “The more hooks you have in the water, the better,” says Jennifer, who with husband Jim runs a business auctioning luxury goods online. The listing has attracted at least one serious inquiry from a potential buyer, who is planning to fly in from California to see the home.

Strategy: Swap Homes
Thom Carter of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida tried “a little bit of everything,” including For Sale by Owner, when he put his Florida home on the market last year. Frustrated by the lack of results, Thom decided to give home swapping a try. Within weeks he was contacted by other swappers, one luckily in Florida, where he wanted to stay. While he got $10,000 less than he wanted, he paid $16,000 less than asking on the swap.

Strategy: Hunt for Buyers Online

After her mother moved to an assisted-living facility, Joan Marshall of Bellevue, Washington had to sell her childhood home on Mercer Island, outside Seattle. So she turned to Zillow.com’s Make Me Move feature, which lets sellers list their property at a dream price_ in her case $1.1 million. Though the home sold for a bit less, $960,000, Joan says it was still “a fair value.” Plus, the deal was signed within a week.
