Leave piles of cornmeal around that eat it up and get thirsty and drink and it swells up and they explode. Especially great in the south for those ant hills. Carpenter ants I wouldn't waste time and hire a professional exterminator. We get a yearly service done and they come back if any problems and so far good. This is a must in the South. Carpenter ants can do a serious amount of damage over time. If you have large mature trees around your home you may find that after you treat for them they return after just a few years.
