Looking for a foot-friendly place to live?
If you’re looking for a place to live or work that’ll keep errands within walking distance, parts of Vancouver and Camas might be just as foot-friendly as Portland’s Pearl district.
Visit walkscore.com and type in your address, and you’ll get a rough rating for your neighborhood’s “walkability.”
The Web site, which appeared in early July, was inspired by Alan Durning, director of the Seattle-based Sightline Institute. Durning hatched the idea last year as part of a project to cut his own family’s use of the automobile.
“Less than a mile is a comfortable walk; more is a burden,” wrote Durning, who visited Vancouver last month to speak at the Southwest Washington Sustainability Conference.
American adults use their cars for about 25 percent of trips less than a mile, according to a 1995 federal study. And a walkability boom is expected soon.
